Seeing the Person before their Dementia

Join us for a live and interactive discussion Sonya Barsness, who works to apply a new paradigm of aging and dementia that is based on person-centered values of choice, dignity, respect, self-determination, purposeful living, and shared humanity. When we focus on personhood, and not just the disease, we see the strengths, assets, and resources of people with dementia. This guides both people living with dementia and their care partners in LIVING with dementia on a day to day basis.

12:18:07     From Steve Gurney - ProAging Community : Anonymous Attendee 12:17 PM

are you of the belief that dementia is a disease rather than outcome/symptom of an actual illness...aka Parkinsons, Alzheimers,

12:24:12     From Ellen Phipps  to  Sharon DeBoevet and all panelists : How the heck are you? So great to hear from you!!

12:26:05     From Sharon DeBoevet  to  Hosts and panelists : I'm good - I left DSS Dec 1, 2023.  My new email is sharondeboever@outlook.com   Would love to talk more - by the way you look so happy

12:26:12     From Jim Mann : It's amazing the automatic assumption of incapability.

12:27:06     From Adele Logan-Galen : We talk about them as if they aren't there or can't hear us.  I wonder how that makes them feel.

12:29:27     From Susan Hurd : Cultural sensitivity awareness

12:35:27     From Ginger Smith : I was ghosted by my family.

12:36:50     From Jim Mann : Ask him yourself!

12:40:51     From Sarah Nord  to  Hosts and panelists : Do you have a link for the stigma guide?

12:41:37     From Jim Mann : Thank you for the recommendation to the flippingstigma.com toolkit.

12:42:47     From Gregory Fenlon : I am experiencing too much echo in the sound, anyone else having this issue??

12:43:12     From deb merriner : Many times when I've been out and about with a person living with dementia and/or in a wheelchair, I am asked a question about our client when the person should have been asked directly.  How do you suggest handling this situation to protect the dignity of the person living with dementia?

12:44:20     From Renee Jefferson : @Ginger, I'm so sorry about your family. Hopefully, the will educate themselves and offer their support (if you want it).

12:46:24     From Barbara Tourtelot : My sister is aware enough of her situation, which has been gradual over the last decade, that she cringes when she hears the word “Alzheimer’s.“ She doesn’t feel much better about the term dementia, though I’ve tried to explain to her that it only means memory loss, of which I’m suffering as well. I have Parkinson’s and ADHD, so memory loss  memory loss comes up a lot!

She has said that she wishes she was more “out of it” so that she wouldn’t be aware of these terms.

12:47:54     From Renee Jefferson : https://www.flippingstigma.com/introduction

12:49:10     From Steve Gurney - ProAging Community : The purpose of this toolkit is to recognize and respond to this stigma and discrimination.  It has been designed by people with dementia to help others – including other people living with dementia, the people who support them, and those who do research  –  to address the challenges of stigma and discrimination.

While you can enter the site in any way you choose, we have tried to make the information as relevant to each group as possible. https://www.flippingstigma.com/

13:05:23     From Ellen Phipps : My Dad was living with dementia for the last 4 years of his life. Towards the end, he was in a wheelchair and living in a facility. One day, he "scooted" past a few nursing stations at the facility and ended up outside. The facility he had been living in for 6 years wanted to kick him out!  When I asked my Dad,, "why did you go outside, Dad?" said , "I was looking for a toilet"!!

13:05:56     From Barbara Tourtelot : My sister has so much trouble expressing herself that she doesn't talk to anyone except another sister and me.

13:06:13     From paula david : Thank you for the presentation. I think this information is very helpful in helping my mom after the very recent passing of my dad. I have been doing a great deal of caregiving for them both in the past 6 months. I don't feel that she really is having dementia but is very vulnerable

13:08:37     From Ellen Phipps : Thank you both!  This was excellent...I need to jump off!
